Franceschi Frenchies: The Art & Science of Responsible Breeding

At Franceschi Frenchies®, breeding is more than producing puppies—it is a thoughtfully planned process shaped by decades of experience, careful observation, and a commitment to the long-term health, temperament, structure, and quality of the French Bulldog. Every pairing is considered individually with the goal of producing dogs that represent the qualities we value in our program while continuing to improve upon each generation.
The Importance of Health and Genetic Testing
Genetic health testing is an important part of the Franceschi Frenchies® breeding program. We use documented genetic information to help us better understand our dogs and make informed breeding decisions.
Our breeding dogs are evaluated using multiple sources of information, which may include:

✔ Pedigree and family history
✔ Temperament
✔ Structure and movement
✔ Breed type
✔ Veterinary care and overall condition
✔ AKC DNA identification for applicable studs
With multiple generations of genetically tested dogs behind our program, we have the benefit of evaluating more than an individual dog's test results. We can also consider what we know about its pedigree, relatives, previous generations, and—when applicable—the offspring a dog has produced.
Genetic testing is a valuable tool, but it is not a guarantee of future health. Responsible breeding requires looking at the whole dog and the whole pedigree, not making decisions based on a single test result or trait.
Selecting a Thoughtful Pairing
Responsible breeding begins with selecting two dogs whose strengths complement one another. Each biological parent contributes approximately half of a puppy's nuclear DNA, making the thoughtful selection of both the dam and sire equally important. At Franceschi Frenchies®, we evaluate potential pairings using documented genetic information alongside pedigree, health, temperament, structure, movement, breed type, and what we know about the dogs and their lines.
When evaluating a potential pairing, we consider factors such as:
Structure and Breed Type – We consider the physical qualities of both dogs and how their strengths and weaknesses may complement one another.
Temperament – The temperament of the dam, sire, their relatives, and previously produced offspring can provide valuable information when planning future generations.
Pedigree and Production History – A documented pedigree helps us study the dogs behind a pairing, while previous offspring can provide additional insight into what particular dogs and bloodlines may produce.
Genetic Health Information – Documented genetic results help inform pairing decisions and allow us to consider tested variants alongside the many other factors involved in responsible breeding.
The Long-Term Direction of Our Program – Each breeding should have a purpose. We consider not only the puppies we hope to produce today, but also how a pairing may contribute to future generations of Franceschi Frenchies®.
The Breeding Process
French Bulldog reproduction requires careful planning, timing, and attention to the individual dogs involved. At Franceschi Frenchies®, breeding decisions are made on a case-by-case basis with the health and well-being of our dogs at the forefront.
Artificial insemination may be used as part of the breeding process when appropriate. Reproductive timing is also carefully considered because every female and every breeding cycle can be different.
Rather than relying on a single factor, we approach reproduction with the same philosophy we apply to our breeding program as a whole: evaluate the individual dog, use available information responsibly, and make thoughtful decisions based on the circumstances of each breeding.
Tracking Pregnancy and Supporting Our Dams
Once a breeding has taken place, our attention turns to supporting the dam throughout the pregnancy and preparing for the potential litter.
Pregnancy management may include:
Pregnancy Confirmation – Veterinary evaluation and ultrasound may be used to help confirm pregnancy.
Nutritional Support – Nutrition is managed with the needs of the individual dam and developing pregnancy in mind.
Appropriate Activity and Hydration – We monitor our dams closely and provide appropriate activity, hydration, rest, and daily care throughout pregnancy.
Late-Pregnancy Evaluation – Veterinary radiography may be used later in pregnancy to help assess litter size and assist with preparation for delivery.
Every pregnancy is different, which is why we believe careful observation and individualized care are so important.
Looking Ahead to the Next Generation
Responsible breeding is a long-term process. What matters is not simply producing a litter, but evaluating what each generation contributes to the future of the program.
At Franceschi Frenchies®, we continue to study our pedigrees, document genetic information, evaluate the dogs we produce as they mature, and use what we learn to guide future breeding decisions. Our goal is continued improvement while preserving the temperament, structure, movement, breed type, and qualities we value in the French Bulldog.
